What Is Netflix Advertising?
Netflix advertising is a form of streaming TV advertising that allows brands to place ads within the platform’s ad-supported experience, reaching a large and highly engaged audience. Advertisers can use non-skippable video placements that appear before or during select Netflix shows and movies.
Benefits of Netflix Advertising
Advertising on Netflix can offer several clear advantages for your brand.
-
Advanced Targeting Capabilities
Netflix Ads Suite combines demographic, interest, life-stage, in-market, and first-party targeting with Amazon and Yahoo DSP data.
-
Elevated Engagement Levels
Netflix says more than 80% of ads members watch weekly, while 44% who saw an ad there did not see the same ad on broadcast TV or other streaming services.
-
Premium Content Setting
Netflix says it had almost five times as many Nielsen Top 10 originals as its nearest competitor in 2025.
-
Reach a Young Audience
Netflix says its ad-supported plan reached more U.S. adults ages 18–34 than any broadcast or cable network in 2025.
-
In-Depth Analytics and Reporting
Netflix supports reach, frequency, brand lift, attribution, and conversion measurement through its Conversion API and planning APIs.
How Does Netflix Advertising Work?
On the consumer side, Netflix advertising works just like any other hybrid AVOD/SVOD service. Its lower-priced subscription experience provides a light ad load to viewers. Members on ad-supported plans see a few short ads per hour, generally before and during select shows and movies. Netflix tries to place ads at natural plot breaks to keep things as seamless and non-disruptive as possible.
And unlike traditional TV advertising, Netflix offers advertisers data-driven targeting, programmatic buying, and advanced measurement. So not only are commercials placed at natural plot breaks, but they’re also much more likely to be relevant to the viewer.
Netflix Ads Suite, Explained
The Netflix Ads Suite is Netflix’s in-house first-party advertising platform. It powers planning, targeting, buying, ad serving, measurement, creative formats, you name it. Basically, everything about the campaign is managed here. Advertisers can buy directly through Netflix or programmatically through supported demand-side platforms (DSPs).
The trade-off with any publisher-specific ecosystem still applies: if you run ads across multiple platforms, you’ll likely have to manage several buying environments simultaneously. However, Netflix’s expanding DSP integrations make access more flexible than before.
Netflix Advertising & Platform Engagement
These figures show the depth and scale of opportunity with Netflix ads.
60%+ Ads-plan sign-ups
Netflix reported that its ads plan represented over 60% of all Q1 2026 sign-ups.
250M+ Monthly active viewers
Netflix reported that its ads reached more than 250 million global monthly active viewers.
97B+ Hours watched
Netflix audiences watched more than 97 billion hours on Netflix from January through June 2026, its highest half-year total to date.
100+ Targetable interests
Netflix said in May 2025 that advertisers could target more than 100 interests across over 17 categories, including life stages.
Types of Netflix Ads
Netflix offers multiple ad types and formats designed to help brands capitalize on key moments.
Pre-Roll
Pre-roll ads play before select shows or movies, giving brands an opportunity to capture attention before the content begins. These video ads are non-skippable, though viewers can pause playback during an ad.
Mid-Roll
Mid-roll ads appear during select shows and movies. Again, Netflix does its best to place them at natural plot breaks so they fit more smoothly into the viewing experience.
Pause Ads
Pause Ads appear 5 seconds after a viewer pauses content, giving them a moment before a brand visual appears on the screen. This ad type is quite effective because the user initiates the break, so the ads don’t disrupt viewing at all.
Innovative & Advanced Formats
- Interactive Video Ads: Netflix’s modular interactive formats can combine video creative with overlays, calls to action, and second-screen features.
- Binge Ads: After a member watches three consecutive episodes, Netflix can present the fourth episode ad-free as part of a sponsored binge experience.
- Moment Sponsorships: These placements let brands align with relevant cultural moments, such as local holidays.
- Single Title Sponsorships: These high-impact partnerships connect a brand with a specific Netflix series, film, or season.
- Live Event Ads: Commercial breaks can run during live programming and may appear across all Netflix plans..
- QR Code Integration: QR codes can appear in video and Pause Ads, allowing viewers to use a second screen to shop, learn more, or visit a website.

How Are Netflix Ads Shown?
Netflix serves a few short ads per hour, keeping things light and user-friendly. Ads appear before and during select TV shows and movies, while some new releases only have ads before they begin. The progress bar shows upcoming ad breaks when playback is paused, and the upper-right corner displays how many ads are in each break.
Viewers can’t skip or fast-forward ads, though they can pause playback.
How Are Netflix Ads Selected?
Netflix may select ads based on members’ activity on the platform, including the genres they view, their general location, and information they provide to Netflix.
Unless they opt out, eligible members may also receive targeted ads using their activity across unaffiliated third-party apps and websites. Members who opt out still see ads, but Netflix doesn’t use behavioral data to select them.
What’s perhaps most interesting about Netflix offering an ad-supported plan, counter to their previous stance, is the explosive growth they’ve seen in revenue. Take a look at the chart below. There’s a noticeable upturn in revenue since they announced their ad-supported plan in November 2022.
Netflix Total Revenue and Operating Income, 2020–2025
| Year | Total revenue | Operating income |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 25.00 | 4.59 |
| 2021 | 29.70 | 6.19 |
| 2022 | 31.62 | 5.63 |
| 2023 | 33.72 | 6.95 |
| 2024 | 39.00 | 10.42 |
| 2025 | 45.18 | 13.33 |
Netflix Advertising Costs, Explained
So all of this sounds great, but what does it actually cost to advertise on Netflix? Netflix doesn’t list a universal rate card, standard cost per thousand impressions (CPM), or minimum spend in its public advertiser materials. But they do offer both direct and programmatic buying options.
That said, and we’re sorry to be vague here, but pricing can vary quite a bit between campaigns. Here are some of the factors that move the needle:
- Ad Format: Standard video, Pause Ads, Live ads, sponsorships, and custom formats may use different pricing structures.
- Audience Targeting: Geography, demographics, interests, life stages, in-market signals, and first-party data can shape the buy.
- Campaign Duration and Frequency: Flight length, impression volume, reach goals, and frequency requirements can influence the total budget.
- Inventory and Demand: Pricing may vary based on available inventory and advertiser demand at the time of the buy.
- Buying Method: Direct deals and programmatic buys through supported DSPs use different workflows and deal types.
Now, it’s not all opaque. Netflix has done a lot over the past few years to bring its CPMs down into a more affordable range, as the numbers below suggest.
Netflix CPMs: Launch vs. 2026
These are reported market prices, not a Netflix-published rate card.
Reported Launch CPM
Digiday reported an initial $60 CPM when Netflix’s ad business launched in 2022.
Reported 2026 CPM
By April 2026, Digiday reported that Netflix pricing had fallen to the low $20s CPM.
Change: approximately 60% lower than the reported launch CPM.
Netflix Ads Best Practices
There is no one-size-fits-all set of rules to hit a home run. But if you follow the best practices below, your odds certainly increase.
1. Create High-Quality, Cinematic Ad Content
Netflix places ads alongside professionally produced programming, so your commercial needs to feel like it belongs. Use polished visuals, clear storytelling, and clean sound. Don’t take any shortcuts here.
2. Leverage Netflix’s Advanced Targeting Options
Netflix supports a wide range of audience targeting options. Don’t ignore these. Use the options that align with your campaign goal to improve relevance and reduce wasted impressions.
3. Keep Messaging Concise and Engaging
Viewers should understand your message quickly. Lead with a strong hook, establish your brand early, and focus each ad on one clear idea.
4. Align Your Ad Creative with Popular Netflix Content
Ads can feel more natural when the creative and surrounding content share a relevant context. Use Netflix’s contextual categories, Single Title Sponsorships, or custom partnerships when content alignment supports your strategy.
5. A/B Test Different Creative Variations
Testing multiple ad versions with different messaging, visuals, and CTAs can show which elements perform best with your audience. Change one major variable at a time, then compare results.
If done right, here’s what you can expect.
